The first stitch

One small mend. Start here.

A simple patch is a good first project for woven fabric such as denim. Practice on a scrap before repairing something precious.

01Choose a small repair

Wash and dry the garment. Find a small hole with sound fabric around it. Large worn areas, stretchy knits and high-stress seams need a different approach.

02Gather what you have

Use a fabric patch, suitable needle, thread, scissors and pins. Choose a patch that extends beyond the worn area on every side. Keep sharp tools away from children.

03Patch, stitch, check

Pin the patch behind the hole. Secure it with small running stitches through both layers, then add rows across the patch. Fasten the thread ends and check for loose edges.
